Many people are aware of the carbon emissions from vehicles that use gasoline. However, not many people know that the braking system is another source of air pollution. Even electric vehicle emits dust from the braking system that causes pollution. If you own a vehicle, it is crucial to know how the braking system dust affects your health and how to prevent it. Read the article to the end to learn more.

Brake Dust and Its Impact on Your Health

When you are driving, you use the braking system often, and the metal particles from rubbing the brake pads affect the air quality inside the vehicle. The fine particles emitted from the brakes cause harm to your health and the environment in general. In fact, the braking system contributes to a whopping 20% of air pollution by fine particles. Therefore, even as technology tries to achieve zero-emission, it is vital to consider this unknown source of air pollution.

Once the fine particles are released into the air, you will breathe them in, and they reach the lungs. The particles react with the sulfate particles, creating a toxic substance that damages the lungs and causes respiratory issues. Several people have chronic coughs from the brake dust. Others suffer from bronchitis and pneumonia.

How to Prevent Air Pollution from Brake Dust

Finding a solution to reduce air pollution by fine particles has become important. As you adopt technology to reduce air pollution from brake dust, it is crucial to do the following.

1. Replacing Worn Out Pads

You first need to prevent air pollution by brake dust by replacing worn-out brake pads. When brake pads are used for a long time, they wear off due to friction. Using worn-out pads creates more dust. Therefore, the best way to protect your health and the environment from fine particles is to replace the pads as per the vehicle manual. You may need to replace them after driving for around 50,000 miles. Ensure your mechanic inspects the pads properly whenever you go for an oil change. The mechanic should check for issues like weird or squealing noises.

2. Servicing the Calipers

Another crucial thing you should do to prevent air pollution by fine particles is servicing the calipers. The calipers should be smooth to prevent friction. If they are sticky, the brakes create more dust. So, ensure you service them after every two years or after traveling a particular distance.

3. Buying Ceramic Pads

Last but not least, reduce dust pollution from the brakes by choosing ceramic brakes instead of metal ones. Ceramic brakes are smooth and create less dust than metallic ones. Furthermore, the dust they create is less toxic. So, whenever you buy your brake pads, always use ceramic ones. They may cost a bit more, but the benefits are worthwhile.

Conclusion

That is how brake dust affects your health and the crucial steps you can take to reduce air pollution caused by fine particles from the brakes. Ensure your brakes are in good working condition and maintain a clean car.
